Introduction

Hello, my name is Dora Alicia Reyes, and I am currently enrolled in the master’s program in Educational Technology at The University of Rio Grande Valley. My career ambition is to become a middle school teacher, guiding students through their educational journeys and helping them expand their knowledge. I am deeply passionate about education and aspire to continue advancing in my career, ultimately achieving a Doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in the field.

Experience Before the Program

Before embarking on my master’s program, my experience in education was primarily rooted in traditional classroom teaching and administrative roles. I worked as a teaching assistant in a middle school, where I provided support to lead teachers and directly interacted with students, facilitating their learning processes. Although I was dedicated and enthusiastic, my exposure to educational technology was minimal and largely limited to basic tools like word processors and simple educational software.

One specific example that stands out was my struggle with integrating technology into lesson plans. I often relied on conventional methods such as chalkboards and textbooks, finding it challenging to engage students who were increasingly accustomed to digital environments. The lack of training and resources in educational technology left me feeling inadequately prepared to meet the evolving needs of my students. This experience motivated me to seek more education and professional development in educational technology, with the goal of transforming my teaching practices and enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes.

Experience Throughout the Program

The master’s program in Educational Technology has been a transformative journey that has significantly broadened my perspective and skill set. During this time, I have had the opportunity to engage with various innovative tools and methodologies that have reshaped my approach to teaching.

One of the most impactful experiences was my work on the e-Portfolio project, where I selected specific artifacts that demonstrated my growth and learning. One artifact was a lesson plan I developed using interactive tools such as Nearpod and Genially. These platforms allowed me to create dynamic and engaging content that significantly improved student participation and understanding. For instance, I designed a lesson on environmental science that included interactive quizzes and multimedia presentations, which kept students actively involved and excited about the subject matter.

Another significant artifact was a research paper I wrote on the impact of AI in education. This project opened my eyes to the vast potential of artificial intelligence in personalizing learning experiences and providing real-time feedback. I explored tools like ChatGPT and Copilot, which I then applied in my classroom to create customized learning activities. These tools enabled me to better cater to the diverse learning needs of my students, ensuring that each one received the appropriate level of challenge and support.

The program also emphasized the importance of collaboration and reflection. Reflecting on my journey through the master’s program, I have gained numerous insights that will shape my future teaching practices. A key piece of advice I would give to myself and to other educators is to approach technology with curiosity and a willingness to experiment. It is natural to feel intimidated by new technologies, but the rewards of overcoming this initial apprehension are immense. For example, my initial hesitation to use AI tools like ChatGPT was quickly dispelled once I saw the positive impact these tools had on my students’ engagement and learning outcomes.

The field of educational technology is constantly evolving, and staying updated with the latest trends and tools is crucial for delivering high-quality education. I encourage fellow educators to seek out opportunities for learning and growth, whether through formal education programs, professional workshops, or self-directed learning.

Technology should be used to enhance learning experiences and address the specific needs of students, rather than being used for its own sake. Future Goals and Vision

Looking ahead, my goal is to continue advancing in the field of educational technology and to use my knowledge and skills to make a meaningful impact on student learning. I aspire to become a middle school teacher who not only imparts knowledge but also inspires students to explore and embrace technology as a tool for learning and discovery.

In the long term, I aim to pursue a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership with a concentration in higher education administration or in Educational Technology, which will enable me to conduct research and contribute to the development of innovative teaching methods and tools. I envision myself working on projects that explore the use of emerging technologies, such as virtual reality and machine learning, to create immersive and personalized learning experiences for students.

Moreover, I am committed to advocating for the integration of educational technology in schools and to providing professional development opportunities for other educators. I believe that by sharing my experiences and knowledge, I can help others overcome the challenges associated with technology adoption and enhance their teaching practices.
